American Electric Rapid City SD

FROM STRETCHING BARBED WIRE, TO PIANO WIRE, TO COPPER WIRE…

Jim Plummer moved to the Black Hills in 1975 from the Iowa family farm where he worked tuning and repairing pianos for Plummer Piano in Rapid City. In 1977 Jim stepped foot into the electrical contracting industry when he became an apprentice for Mark Whiting at Whiting Electric, who was in business for 40 years in the Rapid City area. After four years of on-the-job training with Whiting Electric, Jim spent two years working on commercial jobs for Gadsden Electric in Spearfish, SD.

The mentorship and training he received in these positions led to his Journeyman’s Card in 1980,

Contractor’s License in 1982 and Master Electrician certification in 1983. It was in 1983 when Jim founded American Electric as a solo entrepreneur with the values of hard work and excellence in customer service and workmanship.
In 1990, Jim hired its first full-time employee, Dana, who is still employed and works as foreman. The business became a full family affair as Jim’s children stepped into the workforce. Jim’s son, Zack Plummer, has been helping around the shop since the age of 12 years old and has been a full-time employee since graduating from high school. Then since 2012, daughter Angelena has been Office Manager and Bookkeeper.
When not wiring a house or commercial building, you can find Jim cruising the Black Hills on his Harley, on fishing excursions around the United States, camping, and spending time with friends and family.
In 2014 Jim Plummer and American Electric marked 31 years in business in Rapid City, SD. When asked what has made his business a success and an established staple in the community, “personal service, putting customers first, and the work ethic to start and finish jobs on time and on budget,” says Jim Plummer.
